  4. BBEdit Lite is a freeware derivative of BBEdit 4.0, the popular and
  5. critically acclaimed text and HTML editor for Web authors, programmers,
  6. on-line-service users, and anyone else who needs to edit plain-text
  7. files.

  9. BBEdit Lite is shipped with a QuickStart document which describes many
  10. of the application╒s features. Full documentation, as well as a
  11. considerable amount of additional functionality, is available with the
  12. purchase of BBEdit 4.0. See the document ╥How do I order BBEdit 4.0╙ for
  13. details on obtaining your own copy of BBEdit.

  15. We are committed to providing continued support for BBEdit Lite by
  16. responding to individual questions and inquiries, as well as in
  17. providing fixes for Lite, and improvements in its functionality. We will

  26. Feature Overview
  27. ------- --------

  29. BBEdit Lite offers the following useful functionality:
  30.  
  31. Ñ    Stationery documents. You can create a stationery document with
  32. BBEdit; whenever you open that document with BBEdit, its contents,
  33. format information, and window position will be used to create a new
  34. untitled window. You can also create a ╥global╙ stationery document
  35. which will be used as a template for all new windows.
  36.  
  37. Ñ    Open Several. This variation on the standard ╥Open╔╙ command
  38. enables you to open multiple files at once from multiple locations in
  39. the file system. You can also specify aliases to files, and those
  40. aliases will be resolved all at once. (Hold down the Option key while
  41. pulling down the File menu to see the ╥Open Several╙ command.)
  42.  
  43. Ñ    Powerful multi-file search. BBEdit offers the usual multi-file
  44. search, in which a disk directory is scanned and the files are opened
  45. one at a time; however, BBEdit can also display the search results in a
  46. window for easy browsing (and selected entries in the window can be
  47. opened for display). The search can also be limited to files that are
  48. already opened for editing in BBEdit, or to files which were already
  49. found in a previous multi-file search. BBEdit also offers multi-file
  50. replace capability for automated ╥search and destroy╙ operations.

  52. Ñ    Zero cost. BBEdit Lite is free, with no qualification. It is not a
  53. shareware or commercial product. It is not a demo version, and there is
  54. no expectation that you will buy anything.

  56. BBEdit Lite also offers the following:

  58. Ñ    High quality. BBEdit Lite is based on mature and stable technology;
  59. this technology is the beneficiary of years of in-house and field use
  60. and testing. The commitment to quality and functionality shown in BBEdit
  61. 4.0 is reflected in BBEdit Lite.

  63. Ñ    File size limited only by available memory. BBEdit Lite╒s default
  64. partition size is 1148K (only 640K with VM or RAMDoubler) of RAM. This
  65. can be set as low as 450K, to make BBEdit Lite the ideal
  66. constantly-resident editor for small to moderate tasks, or turned up as
  67. high as necessary to edit many large files or perform large-scale
  68. search-and-replace operations. BBEdit Lite automatically takes advantage
  69. of available system memory, so that you don╒t have to adjust its
  70. partition size to edit large files.

  72. Ñ    No hard limit on number of files open. The number of files that
  73. BBEdit Lite can have open at once is limited by available memory, and
  74. can be increased or decreased by adjusting  BBEdit Lite╒s partition size
  75. as appropriate.

  77. Ñ    Easy manipulation of multiple files at once. The ╥Open Several╔╙
  78. command makes it possible to open multiple files from different folders
  79. at once, and the Save and Print commands can operate on all open files
  80. at once. (Hold down the Option key while pulling down the File menu to
  81. see the ╥Open Several╔╙ command.

  83. Ñ    Pattern (╥grep╙) searching. Matching patterns can be constructed so
  84. that strings other than exact literal matches can be found and replaced;
  85. for example, converting Pascal comments to C comments, or converting C++
  86. comments to C comments.

  88. Ñ    Drag & Drop Editing. BBEdit Lite now includes support for Macintosh
  89. Drag & Drop, both for internal editing operations, and for exchanging data
  90. with other applications, or creating text clippings in the Finder.

  92. Ñ    High performance. BBEdit Lite 4.0 now includes PowerMac native code
  93. support. Try and enjoy.

  113. BBEdit Lite has many of the same capabilities as the commercial BBEdit;
  114. however, the following capabilities of the commercial BBEdit are -not-
  115. present in BBEdit Lite:

  117. -   BBEdit Lite cannot use the HTML Tools packages supplied with the 
  118.     full version;
  119.  
  120. -    BBEdit Lite does not support integration with Internet service
  121. applications (such as Web browsers and FTP clients);
  122.  
  123. -    BBEdit Lite is not scriptable;
  124.  
  125. -    BBEdit Lite does not include an integrated spelling checker;
  126.  
  127. -    BBEdit Lite's use of Macintosh Drag and Drop is limited to dragging
  128. and dropping of text while editing. Commercial versions of BBEdit make
  129. more comprehensive use of drag-and-drop operations.
  130.  
  131. -    Find Differences (comparing files, folders, and projects) is not
  132. included;
  133.  
  134. -    QuickSearch (an incremental search facility) is not provided;
  135.  
  136. -    There is no option for split windows
  137.  
  138. -    Disk browsers are not available, and you can only have one Search
  139. Results window open at a time;
  140.  
  141. -    PopupFuncs¬ technology is not built in (you can, however, obtain
  142. and install PopupFuncs 2.8 or later into BBEdit Lite);
  143.  
  144. -    BBEdit Lite cannot open or browse project documents;
  145.  
  146. -    Integration with THINK C, Symantec C++, CodeWarrior, and THINK
  147. Reference is not supported;
  148.  
  149. -    ToolServer is not supported;
  150.  
  151. -    The Glossary function is not supported;
  152.  
  153. -    Marker support is not provided;

  155. -    BBEdit Lite does not support Apple Guide and Balloon Help for
  156. active assistance in using its capabilities.

  158. -    BBEdit Lite does not support the PowerTalk mail system;

  160. -    XTND translation is not supported;

  162. In addition to the specific capabilities listed here, BBEdit 4.0
  163. contains a large number of refinements and smaller capabilities that are
  164. not present in BBEdit Lite.

  173. ideal companion for CodeWarrior, THINK C, Symantec C++, THINK Pascal,

  249. known as ╥freeware╙. There is no registration process, no fee requested
  250. or required, no obligation on your part, and no guilt.

  252. We at Bare Bones Software do not subscribe to the concept of
  253. ╥shareware╙; it has been our direct experience that many people simply
  254. ignore shareware notices. The cost of goods related to distributing
  255. BBEdit Lite is very low, and can be recouped by means other than
  256. (unsuccessfully) trying to shame users into paying some small amount of
  257. money for a program.

  259. We believe that when users of a program make the financial sacrifice to
  260. obtain a piece of software, they should expect, and receive, significant
